At the heart of the evitherm database is the THERSYST database that was developed at the University of Stuttgart Institut für Kernenergetik und Energiesysteme (IKE). It comprises over 10,000 data curves of 1,000 mainly engineering materials. In creating its own database evitherm aims firstly to bring the THERSYST data online for the first time and secondly to further build on these data through use of its own specially developed software tool, available for anyone to use at its website, to submit data to the evitherm database. This is in addition to the effort expended in further building the database via the European three-year project that supported the creation of evitherm. Below is a typical example of how thermophysical property data are presented when using the evitherm database:
NELFOOD - Physical Properties of Food Database, hosted by the National Engineering Laboratory, Scotland (NEL) at www.nelfood.com . The NELFOOD interactive website allows users to view, add and modify bibliographic and experimental data on the physical properties of foods. Users can search through over 11000 bibliographic references, 1500 materials and 1600 experiment data sets. About one third of the data in NELFOOD concerns thermal properties of foods. Other categories are mechanical, electrical, diffusion/sorption and optical/colour. The data sets range over 24 categories encompassing 249 subcategories and 260 physical properties. Once data is found, it can be viewed, plotted, copied, and printed out. Access to the data contained within NELFOOD is normally controlled by annual subscription but a special deal has been arranged for evitherm subscribers to gain quick, cheap and easy access to NELFOOD direct from the evitherm website. The evitherm subscriber can simply buy a reduced annual subscription and access NELFOOD direct from the evitherm website. Users of the NELFOOD website divide into three distinct groups:
